Royalqatarcd notes that the newest cryptocurrency on the block, Coin Aptos, launched its mainnet this week, creating considerable buzz around its token airdrop to early users, but there are also questions about the network — which has raised 3.5 billions of dollars in venture capital funding - whether it can live up to its hype technology.

However, with a slew of NFT projects poised to launch on the network, the first real test of the blockchain may come soon. NFT transactions have put considerable strain on the Ethereum and Solana networks in the past, so how will Aptos hold up if the demand for NFTs matches the buzz?

The launch of Aptos came with considerable anticipation, in part because of ample venture capital funding, and because it stemmed from Facebook's abandoned Diem program. But some of the buzz also comes from claims that Aptos can scale to handle more transactions than any current layer 1 blockchain — more than 160,000 transactions per second (TPS).

But if Aptos can really handle such a huge technical demand, we haven't seen evidence of it on mainnet yet. When it launched on Monday, Aptos was only processing a few transactions per second. As of today, that number hovers around 10 TPS.

Of the major smart contract platforms that run autonomous code to power decentralized applications, Ethereum processes around 30 TPS on its mainnet, while Solana is around 3,000 TPS. But testnet claims don’t always match actual conditions on the eventual public mainnet — for example, Solana claims to have hundreds of thousands of TPS on its testnet years ago

Aptos co-founder Mo Shaikh tweeted on Tuesday, "The current TPS is not indicative of network capacity - it's the network sitting idle until the project goes live. This number is expected to increase with more activity." In other words: a lot hasn't happened yet on Aptos, but it's ready for action.
